Later, the right of the voting of the 18 years and older were extended. On March 23, 1971, it was decided to give a vote for the congress and states. By the 26th Amendment, 18 years old citizens empowered and they became happier to give a vote. They felt them powerful citizen who had power over congress.
The text of the 26th amendment is derived from two sections like Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age. Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. These two sections are important things what need to explain to understand. The story began of reducing the age for the voters for a long time ago. It was started in 1941 by the Senator Harley Kilgore. In the 77 the Congress, he advocated lowering the age of the voters. Then congress could not pass the change without the support of the senators, representatives and Eleanor Roosevelt who was the First Lady. Most of the public were interested in lowering the age of the voters and interest was raising to deduce the age. Finally, Georgia and Kentucky senates passed the suggestion in 1943 and 1955.
In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower became the 1st president of the United States. He won the most of the votes due to the age-based renunciations of suffrage for those 18 and older voters. In 1960, Congress and the state legislatures decided to lower the age of the voters from 21 to 18 years. They wanted to make the voting age to 18 years minimum. They together increased pressure. The Vietnam war was the main thing what give pressure. In the war, many young men joined and those young men were under the age 21 and they were unable to give a vote. Since then, the minimum age of the voters became 18. Then Nixon said “Despite my misgivings about the constitutionality of this one provision, I have signed the bill. I have directed the Attorney General to cooperate fully in expediting a swift court test of the constitutionality of the 18-year-old provision”. Then Oregon and Texas challenged the in the court against the Nixon’s statement.
After all of the struggle and debates, the 26th amendment was permitted faster than any other constitutions amendment. There were 17 numbers of states did not like to pass the amendment for voting after the Nixon statements and signed. Then many people question about the maturity of the 18 years old ages young people. Those young people are not enough responsible and they do know much about the country and responsibility for the country. That is why the debate was created. Some people and opposition said that for understanding about the country, it is necessary to be educated or older than 21 years old. After consideration of the ages of soldiers who joined in the Civil War, it was stated that knowledge and education were not the main for restrictive voting; rather than common sense and the capacity to understand the political system for the voting age restrictions.
