There are some amendments to the American constitutions and all of the amendments are not related to the bill of right. The bill of right is the amendments are called from 1st to 10th amendments and other amendments are related to different things. It is necessary to know about all of the amendments of the constitution of the U.S constitutions. The amendment is a legal method for solving the problem in the amendment. There are many lacking available in human created constitution and it is necessary to review those amendments and fixing all of the issues. It may necessary to keep updating, editing or changing some clauses or states. By the amendment, it is possible to fix problems from the legal paper, contract and constitution. There are a total number of 27 amendments and the 26th amendment is one of those amendments and it is not related to the bill of right.
The 26th amendment is not directly connected with the bill of right but it is related to the right of the voting. In the 26th amendment, it is set to the age of the voter. In this amendment, the age is set minimum 18 years for a voter. The Twenty-sixth Amendment (Amendment XXVI) is a major amendment to the United States Constitution. By the amendment, the minimum age of the voter is selected. In the amendment, it is prohibited by the federal government and the state to use age for avoiding the right to give vote who are below the age of 18 to the President and vice president election or other state elections. The permission for the voting for the President and vice president election or other state elections was 21 years and later by the 26th amendment, it became 18 years and this age drive to the lower during the 1960s. By the Supreme Court’s decision, the amendment was fixed for changing the minimum age for voting. In 1970, the voters of 18 years were permitted to give vote only for the federal elections and they were not allowed for voting for the state or local elections. Later, the right of the voting of the 18 years and older were extended. On March 23, 1971, it was decided to give a vote for the congress and states. By the 26th Amendment, 18 years old citizens empowered and they became happier to give a vote. They felt them powerful citizen who had power over congress.
The text of the 26th amendment is derived from two sections like Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age. Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. These two sections are important things what need to explain to understand. The story began of reducing the age for the voters for a long time ago. It was started in 1941 by the Senator Harley Kilgore. In the 77 the Congress, he advocated lowering the age of the voters. Then congress could not pass the change without the support of the senators, representatives and Eleanor Roosevelt who was the First Lady. Most of the public were interested in lowering the age of the voters and interest was raising to deduce the age. Finally, Georgia and Kentucky senates passed the suggestion in 1943 and 1955.
In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower became the 1st president of the United States. He won the most of the votes due to the age-based renunciations of suffrage for those 18 and older voters. In 1960, Congress and the state legislatures decided to lower the age of the voters from 21 to 18 years. They wanted to make the voting age to 18 years minimum. They together increased pressure. The Vietnam war was the main thing what give pressure. In the war, many young men joined and those young men were under the age 21 and they were unable to give a vote. Then it “Old enough to fight, old enough to vote,” was the common slogan for lowering the age. In 1963, the Voting Participation and President’s Commission on Registration proposed by a report to President Johnson to lowering the age. Senator Ted Kennedy proposed to lower the age of the voters to 18 in 1970, according to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. On 22th June 1970, the proposal was passed by President Richard Nixon. Since then, the minimum age of the voters became 18. Then Nixon said “Despite my misgivings about the constitutionality of this one provision, I have signed the bill. I have directed the Attorney General to cooperate fully in expediting a swift court test of the constitutionality of the 18-year-old provision”. Then Oregon and Texas challenged the in the court against the Nixon’s statement.
After all of the struggle and debates, the 26th amendment was permitted faster than any other constitutions amendment. There were 17 numbers of states did not like to pass the amendment for voting after the Nixon statements and signed. Then many people question about the maturity of the 18 years old ages young people. Those young people are not enough responsible and they do know much about the country and responsibility for the country. That is why the debate was created. Some people and opposition said that for understanding about the country, it is necessary to be educated or older than 21 years old. After consideration of the ages of soldiers who joined in the Civil War, it was stated that knowledge and education were not the main for restrictive voting; rather than common sense and the capacity to understand the political system for the voting age restrictions.
There were many states approval the age related amendment of the 26th amendment. Those States are Connecticut, Delaware, Minnesota, Tennessee, Washington, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Montana, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Nebraska, New Jersey, Kansas, Michigan, Alaska, Maryland, Indiana, Maine, Vermont, Louisiana, California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Texas, South Carolina, West Virginia, New Hampshire, Arizona, Rhode Island, New York, Oregon, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Alabama, Ohio and North Carolina.
There were some other states did not approve the 26th amendment and those states are Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota and Utah. Now 26th amendment is permitted by most of the states of the United States. Majority states liked the age down the drive from 21 to 18. This method increased the number of the voted in all of the countries and states. As most of the people, congress members, and states accepted this amendment, so it passed quickly.
As the amendment is related to voter’s age and it is necessary to know detail by the citizen of the United States.
